Congressman Jim McDermott to speak at April Meeting

Please join us in welcoming Congressman Jim McDermott to the 37^th Legislative District on April 13 at our General Membership Meeting.  Rep. McDermott will be joining us to talk about our healthcare system and the reforms it desperately needs. 

Rep. McDermott is currently serving his 10^th term in the U.S. House of Representatives serving the 7^th Congressional District which includes most of the 37^th Legislative District.  He is a senior Member of the Ways and Means Committee, chairs the Income Security and Family Support Subcommittee and serves on the Subcommittee on Trade.  He also spent 15 years representing the 43^rd Legislative District in the State Legislature and State Senate.

A physician, Rep. McDermott is especially interested in health care issues. While in the state legislature, he developed the Washington Basic Health Plan, the first state program in the country to provide low-cost health insurance to the unemployed and working poor.  In the Congress, he is especially active in health care reform issues.  He founded and chairs the Congressional Task Force on International HIV/AIDS, and introduced the AIDS Housing Opportunities Act, for special housing assistance for people with AIDS.  Rep. McDermott, the co-author of Single Payer health care legislation, is leading the fight in the House of Representatives to guarantee all Americans comprehensive health care coverage.

Joining Rep. McDermott in our discussion on Healthcare will be representatives from Physicians for a National Healthcare Program (PHNP) and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

This will be a great opportunity to hear from our Congressman on an issue he is passionate about.  As always our meeting will be at the Central Area Senior Center, 500 30^th Ave S, Seattle.  Social half-hour begins at 7:00pm and the meeting is called to order at 7:30pm.
